Identakey General FAQ
1. What is the IdentaKey™?
A USB thumb drive designed to help you harness
today's technology to organize and securely store your family's/client's
identifying information, including digital photographs and fingerprints.
The application will allow you to enter all important identifying,
medical, and contact information that might be needed in the event of an
emergency. It is capable of printing the following identifying reports:
Complete Profile Report, Fingerprint Chart, Missing Posters, ID Cards,
and ID Key Chain/Bag Tags.
2. How does the IdentaKey™ work?
The IdentaKey™ plugs into your computer's USB drive
and launches an application that it stores on itself. The application
allows you to enter information as you go, update as needed, and
generate ID's, missing posters, and other reports - based on the entered
information. The Key is password protected for your family's/client's
privacy and safety.
3. What information goes on the IdentaKey™?
The IdentaKey™ will hold physical characteristic
information; detailed medical information (immunizations, allergies,
drug allergies); emergency contact information; photographs; fingerprint
scans; and other information that can be used to create your family
member's/client's Complete Profile Report, Fingerprint Chart, ID Cards,
ID Key Chain/Bag Tags, and even Missing person's Posters.
4. Is the Identakey just for families?
For the purposes of simplicity, the term "Family" or
"Family Member" that you will encounter throughout the Identakey
interactive interview is intended to include any group of people for
whose safety and security is your priority. You can use the Identakey
for teams, groups, your daycare clients among many other users.
5. How secure is the IdentaKey™ and Is the information that is saved onto the IdentaKey™ safe/protected?
The IdentaKey™ is username and password protected.
Nothing is added to, or stored on, your computer or the internet. Your
family's identifying information is data encrypted and stored only on
your IdentaKey™. For added security usernames and passwords can be
changed at anytime by accessing the Administration Functions of the
IdentaKey™.
6. Is my family's/client's personal information stored anywhere but securely on the IdentaKey™?
Your family member's/client's personal identifying
information is not stored anywhere, except securely on the IdentaKey™.
The IdentaKey™ will not save information to your personal computer, or
send it out on the Internet. Only in the case of a missing person, when
you fill out the "Missing Person Alert" section on your Key will it
transmit your family member's Missing Poster and a Complete Profile
Report to IdentaKey™.
7. Is the information safe when you backup your IdentaKey™ file onto a computer's hard drive?
When you perform the Backup function a file titled
IdentaKey™ .bak is saved to your computer's hard drive or to an external
disk or hard drive. This file needs the program on the IdentaKey™
USB/flash drive to access and read the information. So no one can access
the information without the IdentaKey™ USB drive and the correct
username and password.
8. Do I need to update my Identakey?
It is important to keep your IdentaKey™ updated regularly
as key information may change (address, phone, contact information).
Update information and pictures on your IdentaKey™(s) every 6-months or earlier if needed
Every 6 months new ID Cards and ID Key Chain/Bag Tags should be created for children and teens, and once every year for adults
Update Fingerprint Card once a year.
Create backup files on a removable disk
9. What if I lose my Identakey?
Another great security feature of IdentaKey™ is that as
the "owner" of the IdentaKey™ you can have your phone number, mailing
address and message be seen immediately if someone were to find your
IdentaKey™ and plug it into a computer. The message displayed to them is as
follows:
"If you have found this USB drive I would appreciate it
if you could return it to me at the address below, thank you." And remember
because the IdentaKey™ requires your username and password nobody
except you will be able to access any vital information on your Identakey!
10. What is the storage capacity of my Identakey?
Vital information for up to 8 individual profiles can be
stored on a single IdentaKey™. However, a single IdentaKey™ could store up
to 18 individual profiles and pictures if pictures and images are optimized
with a file size less then 800 KB each.
11. What are the system requirements for Identakey?
Any IBM-compatible computer using Windows 2000, XP, or
Vista operating system will operate the IdentaKey™. When using Windows 2000,
Service Pack 3 (SP3) is the minimum upgrade requirement from Microsoft.
Upgrades are available from Microsoft at http://update.microsoft.com. Note:
IdentaKey™ Version 2 (V2.0) and newer is compatible with the Windows Vista
operating system.
12. What makes the IdentaKey™ different from how I keep my important information now?
Like most people, you probably don't have all of your
important family member information collected in one place. The
IdentaKey™ keeps all of this vital information in one place, and it can
be carried on your key chain so you have it with you at all times. You
can also make changes or updates as often as you choose, in order to
incorporate new information about your ever changing and growing family
or client base.
13. Does the IdentaKey™ have a guarantee?
Your IdentaKey™ has a 30-Day Money Back Guarantee. To
return your IdentaKey™, contact the place you purchased it. Your
purchase price will be refunded upon the return of the IdentaKey™ to the
place of purchase (or to IdentaKey™ if instructed by the retailer).
Returns will not be processed without a dated receipt. In addition, the
product must be postmarked within 30 days of the purchase date in order
to be accepted for a refund. Shipping charges will be reimbursed only if
the return is the result of a product or software defect on the part of
IdentaKey™, LLC.
14. Why Does all of the information I input into the allergy and medical conditions fields does not appear on the ID Card and Key Chain reports?
There is limited space available on the ID Card and
ID Key Chain reports. For the ID Card each item on the back will hold 2
lines of text. So make sure the critical information is first. Also the
text in the Drug Allergies and Allergy fields are combined on the
reports. For the ID Key Chain report there is space for 3 lines of text
for each of the two selected fields.
15. How many people can I store on a single IdentaKey™?
Approximately 8 individuals can be stored on a single
IdentaKey™. The number of individuals that can be stored is dependent on
the file size of individual pictures and scanned images. If pictures and
images are optimized with a file size less then 800 KB each, a single
IdentaKey™ could hold up to 18 individuals.
16. Is it critical to scan and save fingerprint cards to my IdentaKey™?
No. Fingerprints are not critical to provide to
authorities when a person first goes missing. You can print the
Fingerprint card, make the fingerprints and store them in a safe place
in your house/place of busines to pull out if needed.
17. Where should I store child/family member/client fingerprint cards?
You should store it in safe place where it can always
be found, and found only by you or a family member. For example, in a
fire-proof box, filing cabinet where you keep important family documents
or a safety deposit box.
18. What if I lose the IdentaKey™ and order a replacement? Can I restore my previously saved .bak file to the new usb drive?
Can I restore my previously saved .bak file to the
new usb drive? Yes, when you start your replacement IdentaKey™, the
software will prompt you to create your new IdentaKey™ from a previous
backup file.
19. Why do I need to have four different pictures of each family member/client?
IdentaKey™ recommends four different pictures so you
have several perspectives of each person's appearance. Authorities also
claim it is essential to have all four picture types to properly
identify missing people. We recommend a straight forward shot with your
family member/client looking as they do on an average day and the full
body shot, with hair pulled back, or perhaps wearing a hat. If they wear
glasses, remove them for the second photo. We also recommend two profile
shots; one smiling and the other shot not smiling.
20. Where is the USB port on my computer?
USB ports on desktop computers are found in the front or the back of the CPU. Laptops have USB ports on the side or in the back. If you do not have a free USB port, temporarily unplug an idle USB device and use that port.

flash drive will blink when it is working. If the LED light does not
illuminate try inserting the IdentaKey™ into another computer's USB
drive. If the IdentaKey™ works on another computer, the problem may be
that your first computer has a bad driver or USB port. If your IdentaKey™ LED light illuminates but does not start, please refer to FAQ "I have
